Engine service warning

Hi,

I own a 2004 XC90 Executive, every so often the car goes into what i call "get you home mode" when I can only do 20mph and engine service required comes on in the information panel. If I stop and turn the engine off and then re-strat the message is deleted and the car drives normally until the fault reoccurrs. The car has been back to he garage and placed on the dyagnostic but they seem unable to solve the fault. Has anyone out there got any ideas what could be causing this and how it can be solved.
