If anything, if your transmission is dying anyway, you've got absolutely nothing to lose really by flushing it at this point. Just request that they don't do it with a machine if you have it done, and that you would prefer them to do it manually. They said it has "black and burned" fluid in it.

You have nothing to lose by trying a flush, but BURNED usually means internal damage

Thanks for all the advice on my 2001 XC70. I feel at this point that I may not want to dump any more money into if the flush won't do anything. In fact, I don't know what the chances are that it would fix anything, but they seem pretty low. I am already looking at replacing it with a V50 model, 2007, with a Certified Pre-Owned warranty good until Nov. 2012. But as JRL states, burned probably means internal damage, which means that the flush wouldn't really do anything.
Again, thanks, and maybe I'll have better luck next time.
By the way, I got screwed by the dealer who sold it to me since he didn't disclose the tranny problem. You can read about it from this URL (I registered it, btw, and have set up a page with links to the BBB and Yelp regarding the problems I have had with this guy):

The independent shop drained/refilled my 2001 tranny fluid and was able to get it "clean" finally. It appears to have made no difference. I am just glad it didn't get worse.
But some good news, I found a local transmission shop that specializes in European cars, and also has worked on Volvo transmissions. When I talked to him he said he's worked on the exact problem I have with the 2-1 bump and 1-2 slip, and ended up "refurbishing" or "rebuilding" the valve body, not the gearbox. This coincides with what I have read on other forums about this problem, it appears to be with the valve body-solenoid-teflon rings-electronics portion of the tranny.
He said he did one just like mine about 2 weeks ago and that the customer said it fixed the problem.
I'm excited about this possibility since he wants $1,500 to do the job, which is quite a bit less than a $5,000 complete exchange.
I have decided to let this repair decide the fate of the car, if it fixes it, GREAT, if not, then I'll sell it for whatever I can get for it.
I am also going to inquire into this parts kit, which apparently is designed to repair the exact problem I am having:
http://www.transgo.com/newproducts.php
http://www.transgo.com/SK-AW55.pdf
It's a rebuilt kit for the valve body from TransGo.
Opinions appreciated on this plan.

You guys have finally convinced me to change the fluid in my V70 right now instead of putting it off another month. I have a local Toyota dealership who has the IV stuff and just support them instead of buying the 3309 fluid off the internet. I am planning on getting the ole tranny fluid changed with the new red ATF on Monday and will take pictures and report the results.

My '01 S60 2.4T transmission control unit has never been reprogrammed to eliminate the "disconnect" that seems to cause a problem. At least I
never got any notice and never took it in for that.
I've never done any of the idle motor or fuel pump recalls either because I don't want the dealer to get into the ECU. (It is the IPD upgrade to
16 psi; Yee Haw!)
I recently did a trans three-quart fluid drain and refill at 64K miles.
Fluid was only slightly discolored.
The question is, what causes the trans to fail?
Is it the "disconnect" alone, or the fluid alone?
Or does the "disconnect" cause the fluid to go bad?
Was there ever a recall on this?

FYI an update on my tranny in the 2001 XC70
The first guy who said he could change/rebuild the valve body for $1500 changed his tune when he realized how difficult it is to work on.
So I am back with trying to find someone who can change the tranny for a somewhat reasonable price (although anything over $3K doesn't seem reasonable for a tranny).

It seems there is an uncertainty about whether the "stop-neutral" function is still present.
I can come to a stop on a flat rad, take my foot off the brake, and the car will start to roll forward slowly. Stopping on a upgrade, it stays put with my foot off the brake. On a steeper upgrade, it will slowly roll backward.
I cannot sense any delay when starting from any stop, although I noticed it when the car was new. So did my son-in-law.
There are no imperfect shifting issues with my car.
Fluid is very clean, but not pristine
Anyone have anything more definitive?

If it's still there, you would feel a little "thunk" in and out of gear.
Sounds like yours was removed
