Check to see if your car has a speed sensor or is it a wired version like older cars? If it's electronic try changing the speed sensor

Is your ABS light on? Does the ABS light even come on when the key is in position II before the car starts?

The S/V series speedometer is more robust than the 850 series but the speed signal comes from the ABS module which is a known problem on all of the cars from '96 and on.

If the ABS light is not coming on and is working correctly, it could be a short in the gauge cluster itself. Like Lee said, they are more robust but that does not mean they are bullet proof.

Yes the ABS light has always been on. Should I still check the speed sensor and where exactly would I locate it? Thanks for your help.

There is a transmission speed sensor on a -70 series car but it only controls the shifting patterns, and not the gauges. Your problem is the ABS module that needs to be repaired and has finally conked out on you. The speedometer signal comes through the ABS module from the ABS sensors at the front wheels.

The problem with the modules is the solder joints come undone. If you're any good with a soldering gun, you can easily fix the module yourself.

Or, pull it out and send it off to Vic Rocha for $100-something

I had the same problem on my 98 S70, did the repair to the solder joints on the ABS unit 6 months ago & it's been working fine ever since. I've read somewhere that if the ABS light is on for a period of time the speedo will eventually stop working. Hope the repair works for you & get yourself a good quality E5 Torx socket to undo the screws holding the ECU to the modulator

Good Luck.
