S80 wit electric blues

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

S80 wit electric blues

Post by Cueball »

Hi
I'm the owner of a -99 S80 T5 (B5204T3/HPT)

I had some strange error-codes lately:

- First the message screen says: ABS service required, and the ABS lamp is lit
- I then ask me to find a suitable pace to stop, and restart the car.
- Then it states that SRS service is required, and the SRS lamp is lit
- After a few more seconds it states that there is a critical brake-error and I have to stop immediately.
- The airbag lamp is then lit
- The speedometer stops working
- The radio shuts down
- The car gets very unresponsive (I think the Automatic tranny also stops shifting)
- The lights get weaker
- Message says that there is low voltage
- The car stops (not able to rev it any more)

Trying to start the car again after a while, the error codes are gone, but is shows signs of weak battery. The faults then reappear after only a few minutes.

I tried to change the battery with a brand new fully charged one. The car then seemed fine, so after a test run, i took the chance of a road trip.

After about 40minutes, the faults reappeared, and I had to call for a tow-truck.

Any of you guys have any ideas what this could be?

Have the charging system checked to start with and make decisions after you know the state of that.

Without power from your alternator, the voltage in your car starts dropping. As it drops, your sensors and modules will get erratic and you get all kinds of weird messages. When the voltage gets too low, your main computer gives it up, and everything quits.
The new battery lasting only 40 minutes fits right in with that scenario.

(Kinda wordy way of agreeing with cattledog...)

By the way, SRS codes are rather nasty and annoying, they usually don't like to be reset unless you have the right code reader, or you take it to the dealer.
