Re: S80 2001 Auto Dimming Rearview Mirror Repair How To (long)
OK. I replaced my auto-dim case and glass with the manual case and glass, but kept the original computer. I clipped the two wires and sealed them. Everything works perfectly! Thanks for the help...saved 600 dollars!

The tab means you have a manual mirrorTalbotg wrote:The computer looks almost identical except for the two wire leads and zipper. If it's not auto dim, I wonder what the computer is for? Yes, there is a tab on the bottom of the used one (not on the original one). By P/N do you mean part numbers? Where would I find them on the mirror? OBTW, thanks for you help.

Hello!
Can you help me? I'd like to follow your tip but I can't seem to view some pictures you posted, which I think is critical. From the bottom, it will be the last, 3rd, 5th & 6th pictures. Would it be possible to email it to me?
I think your tip will save me a bundle!
Regards,
Ralph

Sorry, but Imageshack has apparently lost the pictures. I have switched computers and don't have the originals anymore. When you get the mirror open, you will see where the two wires that need to be unsoldered attach to the mirror.finrecinc wrote:Hello!

EDIT - I edited the original post to include a Painted pic with yellow arrows showing where the posts are that you need to unsolder the wires from. Hope this helps.

Yes, go ahead and wiggle it around. You have to press pretty hard to get the internal catches to release. You may have to pry some on the screwdriver also to get it loose. It won't just fall apart.finrecinc wrote:Thanks for your response. I'm trying to open the mirror now but am having some problems. Maybe I'm not pressing hard enough on the areas in our pictures. Shall I wiggle the jewelry tool around and pry it open?

WOW, the procedure above works like a champ. I did my mirror last night on my 2001 Volvo S60 T5. I also got a quote of about $750 to get the mirror replaced at the dealer. This procedure really does work. Thanks so much for posting it. I had to use the shell from the new mirror with the mirror computer from my old mirror and it really works. Thanks again
Please add me to your long list of satisfied customer! Your procedure really works! More importantly, the pictures are invaluable. It took me 3 hours to do but 1.5 hours were used in getting the computer board off since I have to use a regular hairdryer instead of a heating gun and to re-hook the silly spring at the back of the mirror when I re-installed it. But other than that, the process was flawless thanks to you!
P.S. When I was taking the computer board off the old mirror, the 2-part mirror came off...had some brown liquid that I had to wipe off the inner glass. This made it easier to heat up the glass with the hairdryer. Thanks again.

This is really helpful information, but I have one additional question that I didn't see answered:
Can I replace a manual dim mirror with an auto-dim mirror and simply move my circuit board (from the manual dim) over to the auto dim? I'd guess that there are components on the circuit board that handle the dimming function, which would preclude a simple switch, or...?
Thanks for any information on this, and I apologize if I missed a reference to this question somewhere in the thread.
