2000 V70 XC AWD Viration
I have a 2000 Volvo V70 AWD with a vibration issue at speeds less than 45 MPH. At the higher speeds the vibration is less noticeable. I also smell a burning oil smell inside the cabind when stopped at a light. All fluid levels are good and very clean and as a matter of fact there are no drips or leaks visible where I park my car. I hav eheard horror stories about the VC or bevel gear and hope that is not what I am looking at. If I am is it possible to disengage the AWD drive line and run only FWD. Does anyone have any good links for used or rebuilt Volvo parts.

It does sound like your AWD is having an issue. It could be a bad prop shaft or the angle gear (bevel gear) is going out. If I was in your position and don't need the AWD so much, I would pull the driver shaft and just make the car FWD.

The car will function ok without the rear drive shaft, as a FWD vs. AWD. Living in Phoenix, AZ. the AWD functionality is of little or no importance to me really I just dont want to see a bunch of CEL or other issues come up. The car is at the shop right now being checked out. I do believe it has something to do with the AWD as well but want to be certain. I have asked that they remove the weights on the tires and rebalance and rotate as well. Otherwise the car is in great shape. It has 135k with the engine and tranny rebuilt in the last year, new turbo everything. I was also going to check the motor/tranny mounts but believe if I had an issue with them I would feel it on idle or any speed which is not the case. It idles smoothly at 900 rpm's.

Today I removed the prop shaft and you know what, the car feels better than ever. The vibration and noise is gone it is very smooth and quite frankly feels a little more peppy without the RWD. I think I will save a ton of change and not replace the shaft! It was very smooth and would have been done in an hour had I not ran in to a stripped torq head on the last bolt I was removing before I even touched it. Perhaps the previous owner was going to go after the same thing and ran in to that and stopped. I thought about welding a nut to the top of the torq bolt but was getting irritated and broke out the angle grinder. Problem solved in 1 minute. Total time mostly sitting thinking about what to do with that stripped bolt was 7 hrs. So easy this cave man could do it. The front half shafts are next. Wish me luck.
