Major service performed- now no spark
I just performed a major service on my 1996 850 T wagon including Timing belt, PCV system, A/C compressor, oil lines, spark plugs, and serpentine belt. Now the car will not start and the plugs are dry but I do have fuel pressure. Is it possible that I may have left a connector off. I did some searching on the forum and my first suspect is the Camshaft position sensor. I ran the new PCV piping near there and may have dislodged the connector. Are there any other areas that I should look? How about all the connectors that go to the relays on the plastic rail right by the top of the radiator? If one of these is off would that cause the car not to start? It is even too cold in Florida to ride my scooter to work and I need to get this fixed

The cam position sensor would be your best starting point. The crankshaft sensor would be the next one to check - it is a plug sticking out right on top of the transmission. If wires look good, pull out a multimeter and test the resistances of both sensors - you should see something >200 ohms on both of them. It could be pure coincidence that one of the sensors has died.

Hopefully you didn't use the spark plug wire locations from the Haynes manual - it is dead wrong.
Use this as a guide and double check your plug wires on the distributor.

I think I found one possible problem with this connector. Problem is I need to know how to wire it. Can someone please pin the colors so I can wire it back. It is easily accessible on top of the radiator. First one to help gets free beer for life!!

The schematics show
Pin 1 - Orange/Black
Pin 2 - Red
Pin 3 - Green
Pin 4 - Red.
Your yellow wire is not shown of the schematics but I would run it to pin 2 to try things out. If that doesn't work swap the red and the yellow between pins 2 and 4.

I had a similar problem a while back and I tried everything for months, cam sensor, crank sensor and about 5 other things, all the obvious stuff. It finally ended up being two interchangeable connectors hooked up backwards. Once they were flipped back the right way it had spark and fired right up. I don't even know which ones it was. I just started changing one thing and then trying and then putting it back until it worked.

Thanks Lee. It was the connector. After I hooked it up it started right up but was idling rouge. Found another connector off that goes to the air cleaner box and it that fixed the bad idle. Then it was test drive time to see how the turbo was working. It had full boost but then all of a sudden lost boost and started to idle rough again. Drove back to the house and found out the hose going to the idle control blew off since I forgot to put a clamp on it. Now it runs great has full boost and was well worth the $1200 of parts and a few days work. Plus my 14 yr old son now knows a bit about his future car and how to maintain it.
