Two of the power door locks on my V70 have gone on the fritz. They just suddenly stopped unlocking. You can unlock them by hand, then they lock again remotely, but they just won't open electronically. The dealer said this involved a $90 replacement. Has anyone had this problem or know a trick? Also, check engine light is on. I know this is because of a malfunctioning oxygen (?) pump on the emissions system. After 5,000 or so miles of that, I had the dealer override the warning without fixing the problem, but he said if the light comes on again I'll have to replace the pump ($600.) Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

Air pump. Not a common failure. You should call the dealer back and ask for the code's number... then we can at least verify he's not jerking you around.

Or take it to an indy Volvo mechanic.

Sorry to have to disagree with Matthew, but I am advised that the air pump failure IS a common occurrence, to the extent that Volvo repair techs jokingly refer to it as the "other water pump". The problem lies in the placement of the air pump down low where it can be exposed to all manner of road water and immersion when fording low spots in the road during heavy downpours. Add this to the fact that water will accumulate in the pump following failure of the SAS valve (located up high on the top of the engine) after it gets gunked up with exhaust residue, and you have more than enough causes for failure of a pricey emission accessory. You can't get around the replacement, and you must replace the SAS valve if you wish to add "an ounce of prevention" for the new pump. You may be able to save a few bucks locating a pump from a low-mileage wrecked Volvo - I'm poking around for one right now for my '98 S70 T5. I'll post a report on what I find.

A related question: does a ghostly moaning sound accompany the oncoming death of the air pump? I've had my 850 in Seattle (read: wet) for two years, and after the first year I started hearing it during the first 2 minutes of drving (rumored to be the duration of the air pump's activation). Sounds like a slipping belt, but much lower in pitch.

And please do correct me when I'm incorrect!

the door lock go bad alot and the air pump get water in them from the exhust system so you need to change the sas valve and the air pump and checked the relay.
