I just bought a Volvo 850 94 sedan. My "check engine" light came on (which I have come to find out happens alot) and was wondering if I need an OBD II to turn it off? I've read some stuff online but its a bit confusing.
Also, recently my engine has cut out on me-- once when I was idling and once on the freeway (Yikes!). However when I turned the car off and restarted it there was no problem, and has been fine ever since. Could this be a computer problem related to the "Check engine" light? I could always take the car in, but I'd like to do this kind of thing myself, if I can.
Any advice would be appreciated.

You don't need a tool. Just a pencil and paper to write down the codes your Volvo will give you.

The code socket thing for the 850's is up near the windshield washer reservoir. Check the codes for each socket and let us know what you get.

So I ended up buying an Actron Pocket Scan OBD II reader. I got the code PO44O. The Volvo Chilton Manual says that this is a "canister purge (CP) valve leakage", but the manual that came with the device says that it is an "EVAP emission control malfunction". Which one is it? Is the Actron device compattible with Volvos? Should I just use the Chilton manual? Depending on which problem it is, how do I fix it?

The evap valve problem is very common. It's just the little black valve attached with a bracket to the fan shroud on the driver's side of the car. It has a hose attached to each side and an electrical connection on one side also. You can get a replacement one from FCP for $75.Dan wrote:So I ended up buying an Actron Pocket Scan OBD II reader.
