Sounds like a coathanger is dragging along the ground

Post by chokpa »

Hi Everyone

01 2.4 V70 from Australia.

For a few months now the right front wheel is starting to make a sound which is sort've WHIRRING. Like a low WOO WOO WOO as the wheel spins. It also make a distinctive sound that sounds like something is dragging along the ground. Very strange

Anyone have an inkling of what it could be? I will be taking it to the mechanic when I get back from interstate. Wondering if I'll need to take it to a volvo specialist, or if a suspension specialist will do. The volvo mechanics here are pretty expensive

Thanks!

When is the last time you had the brake pads replaced?

Can't say off the top of my head but probably whenever the dealer last prompted us to. I don't think it's that though, as the suspension does seem to be a bit off on that particular side

I'm thinking a wheel bearing, but first I have some questions.

-Does it increase with road speed, and go away if the transmission is dropped into neutral while moving?
-Does it change noise/pitch if you swerve hard to one side at decent speed?

Any idea what is causing this issue? I am having the same issue on my S60R. I am going to pull the wheel off tomorrow and take a closer look but I figured I would ask.

Check the dust shield, if that is bent will make that sort of noise.

I found what is causing my noise. The brake pad is moving around a little bit and causing it to rattle. Looks like I am going to need new brake pads sooner then later.

Do you have the springs on correctly?

Sorry guys, I've been moved interstate for a month...

Yes it changes with speed, not sure what happens when its dropped into neutral. It's auto, so it's left in Drive 100% of the driving time.

Yeah it changes depending on swerves.

Hmm the brake pads sounds like an idea. Unfortunately I won't be back til April...
