Andrew is quite right when he says any electrical system still has leftover charge.
This leftover charge is from capacitors which store electrical energy in any electronic device or computer/ECU.
Hence shorting the positive and negative terminals at the battery side after the battery has been removed is always a NO - No. You might reverse the current flow and damage the ECU and you know how expensive that is.
On the subject of capacitors, just be aware that any capacitor that you see that is bigger than a diameter of one inch can kill a human being. Just be aware and never look down on a "stupid" capacitor, have some respect!

I have a 93 volvo 850 glt that i just got the first of this year from a nice older guy that desided he liked his Jag more. But anyways this is an awesome car that has been pamperd all its life with timely upkeep and garage kept. Like about 2 months into my ownership I took it into a dealership to have it detail cleaned. Well they washed the engine also in this and guess what it dident start after. Ah well of course I made them figure it out and they said that water must have gotten into the ignition system and just caused it to ground out and not start. After about 24 hours it started and had no problems for like 4 weeks. One day it dumped a ton of snow here and on my way home from work it died mid driving. about 12 hours later after having it towed it started right back up. Really starting to piss me off now so I took it in to have it read for codes and the show nothing. I was like ok. 1 month later it did it again while I was driving in rain (this will only stall in wet weather i'm seeing) I pulled the codes myself this time, read no rpm senser signal and no cam shaft sensor signal. K so I ordered a new RPM senor first and did that change out and that sensor is not working eather, Its brand new. So we have a wire problem which could greatly explain the stalling with wet weather thing but ugh~? I'm cunfused at what to do any ideas?
Well theres my two cents worth.

Andrew.....Why would someone clear codes while a car is up on jacks?Sam your mechanic friend is in a bit of a uniqie situation: being a mechanic it means that 99% of the time the car will be on jacks if not on the lift.
yes......It is an 850!

If 93 850 GLT stall and no rpm signal is it the 311?
if 311 then check also the pickup sensor,
3 sensors must be pecfect, speedometer, pick up and rpm. no need to buy new one
just remove from trans
clean it up remove the iron filings on it, reinstall and it should work thereafter with no engine stallings forever and ever live happily thereafter.....

South FLA,
It could be your EMT or your CPS.

I suspect the latter (CPS) since it happened at normal speed (where as the EMT stalling seems to occur more when you are coming to a stop) and if you need to let the engine cool a little before it will restart again. Tough to pin down however if the computer is showing no codes during diagnosis. I definately got a code reading when my CPS was bad. One more thing, it could be your fuel pump, FP filter or FP relay switch too.
Oh, and scary stuff that cutting off going 60-70 MPH down the highway. The father of one on my daughters' classmates here in Pennsy recently was killed when he was rear-ended after his car stalled going down a highway. Don't know if it was a Volvo though.
You can change out the CPS yourself. The ETM not so since it needs computer programming done if replaced. You might just want to try and clean the ETM first.
