Need advice on a 2002 Volvo S60 T5

Post by fzrdar »

Looking at purchasing 2002 Volvo S60 T5 with 221,000 KM,5 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION ,2.3L 5 CYLINDER LIGHT PRESSURE TURBO.

The asking price is $7200.00 and the body looks to be mint condition.

What I need to know is this a reliable vehicle or am I looking at daily maintenance.

Looking for something for wife ti drive just around town as a daily driver.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Darwin

I personally like the T5's, the turbo is a little bigger than the 2.4t of the same vintage and coupled with a manual transmission should make for a fun car to drive. The biggest issues for these cars are the tranny (autos) so you don't have to worry about that and the ETM failures (I think still applied on 02 models), but to my knowledge the recall on the ETM was good for 10 years so if it hasn't been done you should be good there as well.

Personally if I were looking at the car I'd look for a good service history. The engine and the turbo are solid in these cars if maintained (regular oil changes). The timing belt should have been done by now and if not I would do it first thing if purchased. The suspension is another area that may be worn if it hasn't had any parts or pieces replaced. Some people drive these cars forever and never touch the front suspension and some it seems are replacing parts and pieces on a regular schedule. The upside is spring seats, ball joints, tie rod ends etc are not terribly expensive nor difficult to replace. The price seems what I would consider fair or reasonable, location seems to dictate pricing on these cars and I know nothing about Canada. I like the T5's, especially manuals and if I needed another car and a good one of these came along I would be looking with much interest. Good luck with your purchase.

What is a fair price, and should I be concerned about the mileage.Has 221000kms(145000 miles) timing belt was done at 159000,was told it's good to 300000kms.

Took it for a test drive today....WOW this car can move,no rattles.shifted easy through the gears, only reason I'm still undecided
about Buying this car is how much life is left in it before it self destructs.

I suppose if the car is THAT nice (and it come with service records) 6 grand would be OK

If the car was fastidiously maintained, there's no reason it can't go to 300 K MILES

I agree 100% with JRL on this one. I would not pay more then 6K for the car period.
