My recently acquired 1997 V90 3.0SE (92k on clock) has started having problems with the auto transmission. The arrow on the panel flashes and the EWS switches on the gear lever flash. Also, the car feels like it is trying to pull away in too high a gear.
All this points to the PNP switch problem that I have seen described in various posts. Ratcheting the gear lever usually makes it go away for a day or so (ie the gear change feels normal - albeit that the lights keep flashing) but it comes back, usually first thing in the morning (cold?).
I have a warranty that will kick in for worn parts after 90 days (another 70 days in my case).
My question is - do I have a good chance of it lasting that long, or am I likely to get a total failure in the next few days/weeks??
If I have to bite the bullet, what is the standard time (hours) to replace the switch? I am in the UK, so hourly rates might vary, so a time will help me price the work.
Rgrds & TIA

I own a S90 and replaced the PNP switch because that's what the mechanic told me was wrong. I was also told that some car become stuck in a certain gear and won't move. But, here's what I suggest. When the car's in reverse does the reverse lights come on? Can the car start in Neutal? If the answer is no to either of those questions I would go under the car and loosen the PNP switch and move it one way or another, and that might fix the problem. The answer is yes to those questions start shopping for a PNP switch.

The answer to that is sometimes! When the car is playing up, I *can* start in neutral. If I waggle the selector, the problem will go away and I can no longer start in neutral. I guess I will need a new switch?Brianp wrote:I own a S90 and replaced the PNP switch because that's what the mechanic told me was wrong. If I remember to give the selector a good waggle in the morning, things are usually OK for the rest of the day...
