Check Engine Light

Post by Ironbutt1345 »

Just bought a 1997 850 GLT with 146,000 miles. Regular maintainance appears to have been done on the car. The private dealer I bought it from told me they had taken it to the shop for the check engine light, but they couldn't find anything wrong! I then took it to Autozone to have the code read, and the guy there told me, "It's a gas cap." I bought one, and the light is still on after almost two weeks  Any suggestions? The car runs awesome, doesn't smoke or sputter, interior perfect. Thanks.

There is no code specifically for the gas cap. The code that was found was probably for the evaporative emissions control system, which includes the gas cap. If you bought the gas cap from Autozone, that's why the light is still on. You have to use a Volvo cap. If that doesn't fix the problem, then chances are that the evap valve is faulty, but replace the gas cap first. Check www.fcpgroton.com to find an OEM gas cap for cheap.

Did autozone clear the codes? In states like MA they are not permitted by law to do so.

Thanks for the advice, I guess I should have known better than to listen to the "Autozone Guy"! I'll go get a gas cap from Volvo. No, they didn't clear the codes, or even offer to. Great site, I think I'll be here a lot!

my check engine light comes on approx every 3-4 weeks. the code shows a slight evap leak. i replaced the gas cap with a volvo cap, but the light still comes on. if the evap valve is faulty, will i have to mortgage my house to repair????

Evap valve costs only $75 for a 94-95 model and $52 for later models from FCP. They have it listed as a purge valve. You can install it yourself in 10 minutes; extremely easy.
