Flush vs. Drain/ Fill

So, as you can see, I am trying to get my car into shape here.

2001 volvo s80. 105000.

Going to get the transmission fluid changed. Question is, should I get a flush, or just drain and fill. currently no issues and trying to keep it that way. have read things about flushes that make me want to ask the question

My vote is for a series of drain and fills over the course of a couple of months. Gradual change is good IMO.

+1 on that. Especially if you don't know the maintenance history, it's better to be careful.

Oh and a filter change too if that applies. Not sure what transmission the '01 uses.

What does the fluid look like on the dip stick red or brown? Pull out the dip stick and smell the fluid, if it has a burnt smell then the fluid is toast and most likely the trans is not far behind. If it is not brown and does not have a burnt smell then a flush won't hurt it as this tells you the fluid was change as needed and the trans was not over heated.

I would drain, replace the filter and clean the pan of course. after adding 4-5 qrts of ATF, I would flush it, it is so easy, you can get 5-6 ft clear vinyl from lowes or home depo, you will need 2 rings and 1 clip for the transmission hose.

Thanks all.

I think I will do a drain and fill. Looked at the transmission fluid this weekend and didnt look to bad. But weather was horrible and dont have garage or covered parking so will check again this weekend on a sunny day and see what it looks like.

Did not get a burnt smell either but will check again.
