shift lock problem - what is the deal?

Post by hethr68 »

Hi,

I just had a shop R&R the tranny for me (95 850 glt nonturbo) and now about 80% of the time, I have to press the shift lock override button to shift out of park. What is the fix for this? How could replacing the tranny cause this if the switch is in the center console? Is there another component to this switch at the tranny so that the computer knows that the car is mechanically/electrically in park?

Thanks for any information. I looked around on this website before asking, but couldn't really find a coherent explanation of how this shift operates. My Haynes book is no help for specifics.

Also, if it's the microswitch isn't the problem, what else can cause this symptom?

The micro switch in the center console needs to be changed. an easy DIY info can be found on www.volvospeed.com in the maintenance/repair section

Thanks for the info.

I drove the car a bit more today and realized that if I press down just a bit harder on the brake pedal, the switch will activate and release the shift selector. Maybe I just got used to driving the toyota while it was in the shop...or maybe when they moved my seat, I was sitting a bit farther back than before - not sure, but it's fixed for now.
