There is a "shock absorber" that controls the force when the glove box door is opened. It has come off, and I'm wondering if it is broken are simply can be reattached onto to the post inside? And, how is this done? Can it be done by me or does it require a service tech with "special knowledge" of this problem?
It seems it should be simple, but we're talking Volvos here. Any help would be great.
Thanks

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
The gas strut is attached at the top end by a torx screw and the bottom end is pushed onto a shaft. Instructions for removing the glove box simply say to pull the strut off the shaft so, if it is the bottom end and the shaft is intact, it should push back on.
Bill.

The gas strut on my glove compartment of 2001 V70 has broken where it pushes onto the upper attachment. Without thinking, I reassembled the glove compartment before getting the part number for the strut. Can anyone tell me the part number, and perhaps if it would be available online, or would this be something I would have to order from the dealer.
I was just fixing the latch on my 2000 S80. You can access the strut from an access hatch on the right side of the dash. If you pull up on the strut it will just push on the round mount. Chances are one or two of the little plastic clips are broken and it will slip off again. A new on will cost you 6.06 from "www.myvolvopartsonline.com". To get at the torx you'll need to remove the glove box by removing the two hinge pins at the bottom by sliding the pins out. Access to the hinges is by removing the plastic kick plate under the glove box. It's an easy process. Hopefully my new strut will arrive shortly!
