Replacing TPS with another used TPS

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Replacing TPS with another used TPS

Post by pasheking »

Hi Guys,

I have a 2000 volvo S80 that went into limp mode. After doing much research, the extended warranty elapsed and now I'm left with either buying a new TPS and get it reprogramed with the dealer or getting a used part and just have the dealer program the part. However, I found a used tps from one of the junk yard and had replaced it. Now, the car is doing much better, but at times it goes into limp mode and comes out by pressing on the pedal. After talking to the dealer, they say that the TPS is VIN specific and I need to get a new one from them. Since I'm trying to minimize the cost, If I get the VIN from the car that I got the used TPS and I provide with the VIN from the car that I installed the used TPS, can anyone verified if the tps is compatible. My thoughts are that if they are, I only need to pay to reprogram the computer. On the other hand, how much is the computer to reprogram this TPS and what computer do I need to get programmed. I own a small mechanic shop and if the cost of buying a computer is within my range, then I can invest in a new one and do it myself. Please advise.

I would think they should be able to reprogram the used part to the computer. The part does not have any memory does it? If they can sell you a new part and program it to your ECM they can do the same thing to a used part. I’m getting the same BS from the local dealer here about my siren I bought used, they first told me there was no way to reprogram it now they say they can but it will take two hours? Right, Volvo had better get a grip on their dealer network if they want repeat customers. I have to say I love this car but I wound have a hard time buying another one at this point. :(

Good luck Don
