850 bumpin and knocking, but where is the noise comming from

Post by Gabewillwin »

i have a 1997 850 and recently the car has been making a kinda bump knock sounds comming from what seems to be the front pass side wheel well. All the brake components are new and nothing seems loose, but i know how sound carries under a car. The noise happens mostly when the car is being aggitated (a bump or a dip) but on occasion happens under normal driving conditions. Any one have any ideas...the sound is driving me nuts!.

Sounds like a broken spring seat to me since you said it mainly happens when driving over bumps/dips. https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/spring_seats.php <-- This page shows what happens.

The spring pad on the McPhearson strut could be worn out or torn loose. I had the rear lateral sway bar break on my 850 at 65K - the knocking it was making sounding like front suspention.

Get it on a platform lift so that the suspention is compressed and you can inspect it from the bottom.

Let us know what you find out.
