can't get rear brake calipers off

Post by aaallrighty »

Can't get rear brake calipers to retract to get them off. Does Park brake have anything to do with it? Do I need to undo the guide pins and separate the halves of the caliper?

Stop do not seperate a brake caliper! Go and buy the tool to retract the piston, I see you live in N.J. Pep boys sells them Autozone may also have it.You can also try the Tool Warehouse, go online to find them. If you have a problem finding one let me know.

Yes - On your car you must release the parking brake. The other Volvo's use a drum brake inside the rotor . Your car uses the caliper as the emergency brake as well as the rear brake. Release the parking brake lever and the caliper will come right off. After that you will need to turn the caliper piston back in to replace the pads. I have the fancy tool but end up using 45 degree needle nose pliers instead.
