Just saying hi.

Post by Hoov »

Howdy all!,
Just a "hey" to introduce myself. I have been "lurking" here for a few days now & I'm simply amazed at the knowledge I have gained pouring over the forum posts! Many thanks to all of you kind souls who share your passion with us less passionate but very interested folk. I can see what a pita it can be when noobs like me join & start blabbering without doing any homework first. Fact is, kinda pisses me off some too. LOL
I'm only through about half the actual posts but have decided it's time to deal with specifics, so will use the search feature instead of wasting another couple weeks. I have a clue as to how this place works now.
I never thought much about Volvos other than my ignorant impressions. Volvos seemed to be cars purchased by "Yuppie, soccer mom, save the gay, unborn whales, tree hugger folk from Marin County,CA" ... ... Then I bought one. ... Hehehe ... A 1996, 850 GLT sedan, w/162,000 miles on her. Body is straight, complete service records, one owner, NOTHING leaks anywhere, even rain water & almost everything works! I replaced the Trunk struts as well as the forward, center, top light console ... (LAWD! Vovo is proud of their parts!!!) & there are a couple other minor items that need attention but none of no never mind to me for now. The lass is CLEAN! Even looking into the oil fill just a bit of light amber. Purchase price? $1000.00 bucks. I could not resist!
This is probably the most enjoyable car I have ever owned. At 60 years of age I have owned a bunch from the fancy to the beaters. Also raced a full blown fuel flat bottom drag boat. Great fuel consumption though! About 5 gallons per quarter mile @ $9.00 dollars a gallon. ... Hahahaha
I'm a salesman right now, Cemetery property (Spare me the jokes I have heard them all  ) but am also a Licensed Marine Mechanic & have held a C-13 Plumbing Contractors License.
I like to do for myself, enjoy helping others do the same ... (& someday I'll figure out how to remember which neighbor borrowed the particular tool I need right now!) ... To digress a scoche ... Why is it, if it is in their garage more than a month, it becomes THEIRS? ... Rehtorical question, we all know but are either too gullible, (me) or lazy (me) to set up a "check out proceedure". ... But I'm about there! ... ... Nah! Never happen, just should.
Anywho, looking forward to actually participating & thanks again for all the help.

Welcome to the forum. That car should treat you well, you can basically run it as long as you want if you keep up the maintenance.
So have you started hugging trees as well?

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

I also wondered which category you came into - Yuppie, soccer mom, save .....etc. Then read on and realised you were the average "I think I'll buy a Volvo" type and have become hooked. That was how I started in 1986 and I still love them.

LOL ... No Curtis, no tree hugging yet but I have lately noticed this incredibley compelling urge to roll in large piles of leaves! ... Most likely simply the early stages of senility though!

You nailed it Bill! A friend was telling me about this car for sale that was in amazing condition. I had no reason to buy it really but after looking it over & driving it. decided to ask what they wanted for it. They said $1500.00. Asked if they would take a grand, they said "SOLD". ...uh... Well, you shouldn't be haggling if you aren't serious so I bought it.
I've only had it three months but I'm really happy my hand was forced.
I am going to have to change the belts in 10K but that doesn't look to tough. Best place for parts? IDP?
Anywho, my 1987 Nissan Pathfinder has 286K on her & she's still alive so I expect at least that from the 850. GREAT CAR!!! This forum makes it even better!
Getting 24MPG on 87, freeway/city, pretty much equal. I haven't kept track of the individual mileages. The computer tells me I'm getting about 30 on the freeway (running 65-70) & that sounds about right to me. ... Like you, I'm hooked too! LOL

The sterotype is there but it totally works to the "car guys" advantage. The stereotypical Volvo owner doesn't know a bearing carrier from "Ben and Jerry's" so you can buy a great car real cheap. If you can wrench it they are great values.

Thanks for the response Lee! ... Have read a bunch of your posts & learned a couple things from doing so.
Your point, I believe, is correct. In looking over the service records of this car if you subtract the steelership labor costs over the course of her life, she has been a veritable jewel! I'll bet a nickle to a donut she smiled when I signed that title form!! Hahaha
