Would it be possible to just pull the whole thing out and just run without it?

Not without tricking the ECU/O2 sensor into thinking it's there. Otherwise, you'll forever have a check engine light. Some of the Volvospeed guys have done it to 97 and 98 models, but I'm not sure how they do it.

1. You can remove the whole S.A.S. System but it is illegal. You will run into 2 issues
a. passing inspection!
b. selling the car in the future.
If neither is a problem, I guess you can remove the whole system and drive the car until it hits the junkyard.

2. I just posted a DIY to rebuild the Pierburg Air Pump for $20. All you need is a small puller to pull the impeller from the shaft of the Air Pump.
Here you go, take your time to go through it, it is in great detail!

Well my problem isn't replacing it, it's that I have an aftermarket exhaust that doesn't have the place in the down pipe for it and I did away with my air box long ago so I don't think its doing what it's supposed to anyways. I had some codes but reset it and haven't had any for a couple days.

Guys. In my case this was painful. I replaced the airpump (get a rebuilt one on ebay), the relay, the solenoid, the check valve. Still throws the p0410 code. I even tried the bypass ECU diode illegal fix. I had to throw in the towel and take it to the delear.

I did have a bad airpump as it was full of water. Replace the check valve when replacing the air pump as that is what causes the condensation to collect in the pump. The rebuilt ebay pump worked great. The dealer identified the continued p0410 code as a bad ECU (computer). Dealer wanted $1500 for a rebuilt ECU. I got a replacement (again on ebay), used for $80 with 6 month warranty. Popped out the old computer, dropped in the new. Took 10 minutes. Fixed. The repairs added up to $400 all in.

Good luck to others. I found the forums helpful and wanted to share what the solution was for me.

My 98 V70 turbo was giving me a P0410 which was intermittent before today . Could not hear pump operating. Read a post (cannot relocate) about diagnosing before spending for pump and valve. On the 98, pump relay Hella 4RA is the same as the engine relay located next to each other in main fuse box. In the other post, told to switch engine relay with pump relay, I did and engine started. Then applied voltage to relay, no click (hmmm). Put relays back in original order, finger on relay as helper started car, both clicked (hmmm). Other post said to use heavy gauge wire, take out the pump relay and jump the terminals for the pump. Pump works, hooray! In addition, Crack in line, so air is pumped into engine bay and not into exhaust as designed. Fixed air line easily. Cleared code. started engine, immediate code P0410. Cleared code (inexpensive Innova scanner). Started engine, P0410 again. Switched pump and engine relays, car would not start! Ordered pump relay plus spare (both used) for $5.00 each on ebay. Will install and let you know. Before throwing on parts ($$$), or rebuilding pumps, jump the terminals at the pump relay and see if your pump works. Also check and recheck relays, they fail intermittently and then fail

depending on your budget, a rebuilt Volvo air pump is cheap (vs new) or expensive (who has $150 for a stupid pump?). Hear is youtube link for a cheaper replacement. Looks easy to do. Let me know if this works to satisfy the P0410. Thanks
