camshaft position sensor

Hi Folks!

What a great site, now bookmarked.

It looks like I'm not alone in suffering with my 850 cutting out. It used to be prone to doing it if you stopped (engine off) after a short run - at a petrol station would be the usual scenario.

But it's now moved on & has started cutting out whilst driving - not good, not good at all... Keep cranking on & off for 10 mins & it starts.

Now looking through the site, it sounds very much like the CPS is the culprit - all the more so since that's the diag code from the engine light!

But in spite of looking, I can't find two bits of info...

1. Does any one have a write-up on how to test the CPS/replace it (and where is it located incidentally?)

1a. can it be cleaned or is it usually dead?

2. Anyone know where I can get one at a fair price in the UK?

Many thanks & look forward to becoming more regular on the site now I've found you :D

Just to let you know, I got a replacement (used) CPS through www.findapart.co.uk - it came from www.salvogroup.co.uk and was 38GBP including the shipping.

So far, so good - it's not a bad job to do. The fiddliest bit was undoing the electrical connection - that would be easier if you took the distributor off I suspect.

That's cleared the error code and indeed, the car didn't cut out for a day or two - problem is, it's now cutting out/refusing to start again. :(

<sigh> So what now I wonder... No error codes coming up but it's a real pain to say the least.

Well I hate to say it, but then it sounds like that wasn't your problem in the first place... Unless of course, you fixed 1 of 2 problems. A commom next recommended check is the fuel pump or fuel relay switch.

Yeah, I was convinced that I'd got it on the first try  but the CPS certainly needed doing as I was getting a 3-1-4 error from the ECU so the hour or so wasn't wasted - not a too difficult job if you've got the right size torx drivers and a double jointed wrist to reach the electrical connection!

Since then, I removed & stripped the fuel pump relay. It looked in good condition but I cleaned the internal relay contacts with some Isopropyl alcohol and used a fibreglass pencil to clean the external contacts.

<touch wood> Everything's been fine since then - I still find myself holding my breath at times though!

CPS is the round silver thing on the driver's side of the engine, sitting at the end of the exhaust cam, just across from the distributor cap.
