Just did Chinese Water Tourture, problems persist!

Post by bigstupidjerk »

One thing that is clear to me is that when my tank has been 2/3 full and below, my turbo is fine with no hesitations/bucking. Whenever I fill the tank up near full, I get really heavy hesitation from the turbo.
A few weeks back, I was getting some heavy hesitation from the turbo when I tried to boost. I replaced the spark plugs (OEM) but the problem persisted. I just did seafoam/Chinese Water Torture through the vacuum tree last week. I blew out a lot of white smoke while doing an Italian tune up afterward. My turbo hesitation seemed to fade away. Just a couple of days ago, I filled up the tank with another bottle of seafoam for good measure. My hesitation/kick/lag/bucking came back as soon as I pulled away from the gas station.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Do you "top off" when fueling?

I had similar problems when I would try to the nearest dollar or 50 cents. Since then I let the pump run until it clocks and stop.

I think the problem is that the charcoal cannister gets flooded with raw fuel if you "overfill".

Not this latest time, Lee. I went way empty, to about 25 miles left in the tank. I filled up exactly 15 gallons so I could put in 16 oz of Seafoam. Just today, my car went nuts and now my idle is stalling out too. My power was gone and I limped it most of the way home. Could the O2 sensor be clogged? Spark plugs damaged?

After further research, I checked the MAF sensor and it looked fine. I cleaned it out with a vacuum along with my air box and filter. When I test drove it, all the hiccups were gone...for now. Should this part be replaced or did a simple cleaning do the trick?

You may want to try some MAF sensor cleaner on it. It is like break cleaner, only won't harm the plastics. Just spray it off and let it dry. It did wonders for the performance of my 850...

If I have any further issues, that will be my next step. My air box had some tiny debris in it but the filter was okay and the MAF looked clean too. I wonder what the problem was...???

I used a MAF cleaner and replaced the air filter. I still have a bucking or hesitation when I boost into turbo. Is this now a O2 sensor problem?

Codes?

Even if your CEL isn't on Volvos will post codes, contrary to what the auto parts store guys will tell you. On my son's car the CEL was burned out when I bought it anyway - me thinks it had been on for a while. If you can pull any codes they will greatly help if you post them back.

I pulled codes and they are plenty. P1310,0301,0302,0303,0304,0305,0172,0300,0102. I have cleaned the MAF sensor and replaced all spark plugs. I am not sure what "long term idle air trim" means. Am I looking at replacing the cap and rotor, or do I have a vacuum leak? I now find my car dying once it has been driven for about an hour, especially bad after a full tank fill-up.

I would suspect a vacuum/boost leak. Check if your rpm is higher then normal at idle, that would indicate a leak in the intake manifold area after the throttle plate, otherwise I would start looking for leaks in the charge pipes and intercooler. Also you made mention of this issue starting after fill ups, so a saturated charcoal canister is a possibility although i'm not sure it would cause a problem under boost. Codes also point me in the direction of a excessivly lean a/f ratio causing the misfires,
i.e vacuum or boost leaks. A saturated charcoal canisiter would create a rich a/f ratio which is less likely to cause misfires under load though it is possible in extreme cases.

Hope that helps, good luck.
