Hi guys. Just bought a 2001 v70 FWD (after a mechanic told me that transmission was OK) and promptly ordered a roof rack on the net for it, but it looks like I orded a 2000 model. Gulp. Will it work?
Thanks folks.
Go Habs Go! (I guess I won't get any answers from Washington)
EDIT: Supplier kindly agreed to send me the 2001 rack for the same $. Thanks anyway folks.
Have ordered 2000 '70 roof rack for 2001 oops!

Toronthab - Congrats on your recent purchase. I'm looking for a V70 or XC70 in the Toronto market and have been keeping my eye on the 2001-2004s listed in the usual places online. I've only looked at one car (2002) so far and wasn't impressed with condition. Did you look at many? If you don't mind giving me an idea of which ones were dogs and which ones were reasonable I would really appreciate the help, as I'm not looking forward to driving around looking at cars. I always find I'm disappointed based on description and photos in ads vs. the car in person.
Hi..I initially ordered a 2000 OEM model which Patrick at Volvopartsonly said he would switch to a 2001 model so I am expecting an OEM.jda2000 wrote:how much did you pay?

I am looking for same thing.
I paid $130 US.
Time will tell.

Hi... God sent you to embarass me, eh? Truth is , I was waiting for my company to buy me a new car, but had developped a sweetspot for the Volvo v70. So, having a little time to kill, I went to take a look at an advertised one with 160K. They had done some work and I liked the owner of the lot who had a couple of Volvos and a former Volvo dealership mechanic who had just finished working on the car.thedeltaskipper wrote:Toronthab - Congrats on your recent purchase. I took it for a run and liked it a lot. I've had a couple fo Bimmers, but am actually turned off at how 'fancy' they are. I was surprised at how very well appointed the interior is , love the ride and turbo power and the appearance mostly.
I had been worried about the 2001 , reading of transmission problems, but the Toronto people I spoke to told me the Front Wheel Drive was not a problem. I bought the car from Sasha at Great Car at 226 Royalk York in Etobicoke
I also put a provisal in my contract that the deal would hang on my independent mechanic's appraisal . Carus, on McLaughlan and Eglington in Missisauga kindly, quickly and professionlly appraised the car and found that the front and rear oil seals were gone. I brought this to the attention of Sasha, and he immediately said his mechanic, Nick would fix it because he never wants to sell
They found that tye
The type was acting up on my last post so I continue it here. I made an appointment with Nick at the garage for next Tuesday, and I must say that I am very impressed with the commitment and integrity I am receiving. And I did tell him I would pass it on. There was a 2002 there as well, which he had found for a customer. It looked nice. My experience is so far that I have good reasons to trust Sasha, and so, why not give him a try to find you a Volvo. 2002's and up are probably less bother, but I am quite confident with the 2001 I now own. It's my first Volvo and I am very impressed with it.thedeltaskipper wrote:Toronthab - Congrats on your recent purchase. I hear the AWD are a lot more trouble transmission wise, and I don't like the plastic look on the XC either. I prefer the straight paint appearancewise and also did not want the 4WD to begin with, problems or not. The FWD comes with nice electronic traction assists as well.
Good luck my friend.
I have read good and bad reports of the cars, but have so far been happily impressed. If you call Sasha to see what he can do, tell him you were talking to me, Paul , the oil seal failure guy, who appreciated his no BS approach and service. 416 255 8500

Torontohab - don't feel bad that you only looked at one car and bought it as I've done one worse. I found a 2002 Cross Country out of province that I am buying sight unseen. I pick it up on Friday! I haven't even driven a V70 or XC! However I've been around cars for long enough that I know what I'm in for. While I am buying sight unseen I am happy that I've found a two owner 150,000km vehicle that comes with full records of service history and some major work done, such as new transmission.
Thanks for the Sasha recommendation. I did see your car on Autotrader when he had it listed and it was on my short list of cars to follow up on before I found the XC. I'll have to admit that I prefer the look of the V70 over the cladding and extra height of the XC but the XC is far better suited to my individual driving conditions, which include poorly plowed narrow city streets.
I'll be sure to post my impressions about the car after the long drive home on Friday.

HAHAHA! I know what you mean deltaskipper. I based my decision largely on the appearance, mileage, and the fact that they'd done some work on it, including timing belt and idler arms.
Now that I'm so much smarter thanks to everybody here, I'm a little jittery over some of the basics. The seals were done today at no charge which I really appreciated from Sasha at Great Cars, but wonder about the oil trap though PCV tubes were replacecd. I must say that based upon my experience so far, Great Car has been right behind the car. I know he brought in a V70 for another customer so he may well be worth considering if looking for a Volvo. His mechanic Nick at their garage apparently has quite a bit of Volvo experience. Sasha can be reached at 416 832 7087 and they're at 226 Royal York South of the QEW.
Good luck with the XC. It sounds like a pretty good shot. I have been surprised how much I enjoy the car's interior , moon roof and handling with power. Good Lord willin' 'n the crik don't rise I'll get some years out of her.
