Wow,

From the pictures you have dodged a bullet for sure with both the water pump and the timing belt.

The only thing I have not been able to get a torque wrench on is the timing belt idler pulley mount - I just do the German method, gutantight.

The timing belt looks pretty good for the 230K miles on it (or so we think). All service done on this car
was at the dealer until 2008 when they gave us an estimate for $3k to get past inspection. This year
after determining we needed a timing belt on another car (the user manual does not mention timing belt
in the service section or entire manual for that matter) I called Volvo dealer and asked when was
the last time we did the timing belt. They said never (at least as far back as 2002).

You think I dodged a bullet. I'm thankful I found this site in time. I read some of the stories here about
timing belt failures which is why my car is parked in my garage until I finish replacing it.

Do you see problems with the timing belt in the pictures I posted earlier? I expected a cracked and
worn belt yet I don't see any cracks. Once I get it off I take a closer look.

My serpentine belt (BELOW) looks like another bullet...

You have to change your belt, water pump (is near to fail), and review your auxiliary idler, ( try with wheel bearing grease), and move with your hand, if it feel better you can try putting again on the car..

To remove the timing belt idler (torx) you have to use a torx socket, just a little tricky...the anti seize prevents the bolts to became "welded with rust" if your apply the correct torq ..it wont became loose..

After change the timing belt and let the automatic tensioner free, you have to wait 30 minutes..to let the tensioner work before you turn the two engine revs with your wrench as the haynes says...

This is the first I've read this and great advice. Maybe I missed it in the various tutorials or maybe it needs to be added.

Makes a lot of sense given the instructions to compress the tensioner call for 15 minutes to slowly compress it. Luckily
mine is brand new. Bought the OEM timing belt kit from IPD.

Make sense to let the system stabilize before rotating.

I will need to pick up some wheel bearing grease. Does the idler roller come apart like the aux tensioner?
I am a little nervous about using an after market idler roller (one of them was Scantech which is scorned on by
this site)

I'll get back to this on Thursday.

Is the bolt holding the Auxiliary Drive Belt Idler reverse threaded? That is it comes out by
turning clockwise? Insert by turning counter clockwise?

I read this on another idler and it would make sense given the direction of the belt movement
and the position of the idler. I haven't been able find much information on this idler and
the auxiliary drive belt tensioner roller/pulley. Sounds like most folks replace instead of
lubricate.

Also found an old can of Mobolgrease No. 5. in a garage we purchased a while back. Can't find
any specs on it. Likely 40-50 years old. No hits in Google is a bad sign. Just wondering if this will
work for lubricating my bearing. Plan to buy new grease if I don't find some specs on this No. 5 grease.

Google returns hits on Mobilgrease 55 etc so I suspect No. 5 is ancient.

My 96GLT only has 90 thousand on it and I'm not driving it until I've done the timing belt and tensioner/pulley. I'm lucky though cause it's my second ride and I drive my other project whip(Maxima) or my wife's car. Ive heard/read horror stories bout timing belts with these auto's.

Yes, they can. I'm amazed that the dealers are not more proactive in reminding owners. They would make $500 for
each timing belt job but I guess they prefer to sell a new car (if they don't remind owners).

This site opened my eyes. My clock light was out for 10 years...odometer for 1 year...all fixed. Currently doing timing
belt and blower motor/resistor. Having fun in between the frustration of seized bolts and stripped heads.

My car has been in my garage for a few months. The second 850 GLT w/80K I bought has a new timing belt on it from
dealer (we were in a rush) so I'm taking my time with this car.

The question I need answered is which way to unscrew the auxiliary drive belt idler roller. The wrong way is not an
option so I'll wait for an informed response.

Twin cam 5 cyl.. Yup .. U heard right.. pistons to the valves... wipe-out.. Mark everything good B4 ya pull that belt and pay close attn to the tensioner..If ya cant find a mark on the cams.. make some

on the drive belt.. just try it both ways, dont over do it..
