Where to start on a 1998 V70

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

Where to start on a 1998 V70

Post by Trojan »

I own a V70 and I want to feel the Force.

Where would you recommend that I begin my engine/exhaust/GOFASTER type of modifications? The only thing I got on this baby is a limo tint.

I've looked around online and it seems like I can only find suggestions for new chips. Isn't there some more mechanical modification I should start with?

Thanks for your help.

Manual boost controller... it's a very inexpensive small mechanical device that overrides the computer's boost pressure setting. But you can melt your pistons. Basically you can have

performance
price
safety
[pick any two]

Manual Boost Control...

If you're using the stock ecu programming then I wouldn't go anymore than 13 psi. There are some good tuners that have spent many hours tuning the fuel and ignition maps to allow more boost, like 18psi. In doing this they can maintain reasonable peak cylinder pressures and still allow more boost. If you just turn up the boost without optimizing the fuel and ignition maps then bad things will happen. I have run 18-19 psi in mine for over 10k miles with no problems.

Along with melt valves, bend/break rods, destroy rings, etc. :D

Safety can be exchanged with "time and energy", as well. If you're willing to wait, and do everything yourself, generally you can get decent performance at a low price.
Aside from peak cylinder pressures, which are handled by reducing ignition tming as boost increses, the real killer of our motors is detonation and preignition.
These are some excellent writeups on detonation/preignition.

Be careful, the last one gets fairly technical.

Education is the key to achieving all three items on matthew's list, instead of the usual two. An MBC and a programmable EMS is a killer combo, and can usually make a signifigant bit of power, even on a stock turbo.

I'll second the MBC and a chip vote.

So, I've been poking around.

It seems like it would be one of the better options to put in the ipd chip and the sport/dual exhaust. Upping my HP from 190 to 230ish. Excluding installation costs it will be around $1500.

I also talked with the local Volvo dealership about replacing the LPT (low pressure turbo) with an HPT (high), which would cost around $1200 ($900 for the turbo and $300 for the core because it must be swapped).

I hear that Volvo does not release the exact specs/data of how much HP the HPT is responsible for boosting -- Does anyone know? Has anyone done this before who has any feedback for me? What other types of engine/CPU/component upgrades are necessitated by putting in the HPT?

With the HPT, new chip, sport exhaust, and whatever other small tweaks necesasry to make sure the engine doesn't blow up, will the performance be right up there with a V70R?

Thank you for your feedback.

if you want exhaust, i dont know if the regular v70 is like this but i was lookin under my pops 98 v70 xc wagon and the exahust goes into a muffler on the left then loops back and comes out the right ... so i bet that sombitch is restrictive as hell, id reccomend gettin rid of that and havin it come out the left ... theres already a cut out in the bumper

The HPT like on my T5 is about 243HP, give or take 2. I would be very careful putting the HPT in your LPT car especially if you're thinking of upping the ECU as well as downpipes. Not sure how much the LPT transmission and engine can take. I know they are less beefy than the T5 to start with. Volvospeed would be a good place for further discussion as the guys over there are well in-tuned with what's up with these cars and how much they can handle without blowing up your engine.
