HELP! I cracked the bottom of my oil pan today!

HELP! I cracked the bottom of my oil pan today!

I was changing the stabilizer end-link today and the hydraulic jack dropped suddenly causing the blocks/wood I had under the chassis for extra support, to shift and crack the bottom of my oil pan...big mess as all the oil drained out. I managed to catch most of it but now have to figure out what to do.

Is this easy to change or should I have it towed to a shop to repair? The Haynes manual said to remove oil pump and undo timing belt, etc...is this necessary just to drop an oil pan?

What else needs to be changed? 1 gasket for the oil pan?

Will this be expensive?

It is labor intensive, so if you do the work yourself, you may emerge financially unscathed for the most part. The oil pan has a liquid gasket and a bunch of o-rings. PM me and I'll e-mail you illustrated instructions on how to replace the thing. In the mean time, check www.car-part.com for oil pans. You should be able to use an oil pan from mid to late 95 models up to 97 models. You'll need to reference the engine serial number to be sure.

There is a lesson to be learned from all this also. The jack and jack stands should always be placed under the subframe and not on the engine unless you're jacking the engine up to replace a mount or something.

Yeah...I'll have to be a lot more careful with support placement next time. The blocks were under the front chassis piece but went the jack lost the pressure the wood shifted and the edge caught the pan...it sucks!

Engine serial number? Do you mean the VIN? It's a 2.4L Turbo 20V engine.

Is there another number to look for?

The engine serial number is on a white sticker on the front of the timing belt cover.

You might try strandbergauto.com 1-800-448-5121 They have a lot of salvage Volvo parts and are located in Centuria, Wisconsin. Good luck.

Thanks all for the advice and thanks to Sean for the instructions! They worked great but the power steering lines were a royal pain(the screws on the brackets were seized and not wanting to come out).

I spent the day trying to get the cracked pan out and cleaning up the replacement I got from a 96 850 2.3.

However when I finally got mine out and compared it to the 96, the insides were different in terms of the height of the plates and the shape (slightly). The pan should fit but I'm concerned about the internal differences. Can this harm my engine or turbo? :(

The "plates" in the 97 850 Turbo (20 valve) are higher/closer to the top of the oil pan compared to the oil pan from the 96 850. It is also shaped slightly different in the middle where the oil pickup is and in one of the corners. The external and shape/connections all look the same though.

Can I use this pan or should I keep looking for a 97 version (Part #1271604...the part number from the 96 is different)

The first set of pics are from my 97 850 Turbo oil pan and the second are from the 96 850 oil pan.

The part no. on mine is 1271604 (97 850 turbo) but on the replacement one I got from the 96 850, it is 9146845.
