front cam seal, the vvt pully side

Post by capecodbuilder »

I am working on a 2001 v70 t5 (5-spd!!). I replaced a bent rod and have it close to back together. I ordered new cam seals and all was well until I had a close look at the cam with the variable timing pulley. It seems that that side should have a seal that goes around the o.d. of the pulley where it overlaps the cam end, rather than the cam itself. I chucked all the seals as I dismantled (like a bozo) and have ordered two identical seals for the front from fcp groton.
Another wacky twist is that I found a weird , all rubber (no plastic) doughnut looking thing in the trash (searching for the old seal) that fits around the vvt pulley and has some seal-like characteristics... Has anyone had any experience with the seals on these motors with the vvt. And if so please confirm that the seal for the vvt pulley is all rubber.

Wacky question I know, but hey...I'm a fruitcake and it's a Volvo!

I am used to one on the cam and one on the VVT plug. Both appear to be Viton/nitrle or the like.

Thanks for the pic. I have figured out part of the problem... I ordered the seals from fcp and their description of the "front" cam seals is screwy. There are two diff seals on the front as noted on the pic, #8 and # 16. one side seals around the cam one seals around the vvt pully thats bolted to the cam... I've read that on some of these, the vvt pully is on the intake cam...mine is on the exhaust. the part # will set you free. fcp describes the the vvt seal as being for "left, front and drivers-side" all misleading or flat out wrong.
