Today's car and its complexities, illustrated

Post by matthew1 »

This is an image taken from the 2010 XC60 wiring diagram pdf (many thanks to moderator JDS60R for the Volvo wiring diagrams we have). While scrolling through the document, this image struck me. It's the best illustration of how complex today's cars are. Those grey circles are control modules. Translated, control modules are expensive, proprietary electrical boxes.

Sometimes images or words have alternate, unintentional messages that overshadow their intended message. This is one of those.

And none of them can be talked to by anything but dealer software! YAY!

If you have a problem with one of today's newer cars, there's about an 70% chance it has something to do with a software issue, even on something as "simple" as a Honda.

I miss my 80's cars and their (relative) simplicity. So what if they were shaped like wedges of cheese?

Hopefully soon the newest PPC will be out. I don't see many of the old ones for sale but its a great way to talk to all your modules for about $200.
