Hi guys, haven't posted on the forum for a few years now, but I once again own a Volvo. 8) A few things have been going wrong lately, so let's see, where can I start...

Since i've gotten the car, the ABS and tracs off lights have come on intermittently. A few months ago, my car went into "limp mode", with the flashing arrow on and the car apparently stuck in a high gear. I brought this to a Volvo mechanic who cleaned the PNP switch for me, claiming it would save me money and that the sensor would be fine. A couple of weeks ago, I brought the car back to the mechanic to finally clear up the ABS and tracs lights. After bringing the car back and forth to him four times, he finally decided that it wasn't sensors, and that the ABS module was the problem. He said it is very expensive and that it would be fine to drive the car and it wouldn't be a problem. The next day, I was driving and the car went into "limp mode" again. Thinking it was the PNP, I rowed the shifter twenty times back and forth. While this did not turn off the lights, it did get the car driving correctly again. When I brought it back to him, he said the ABS module by all means had to come out or the car would never be right again.

I have very little confidence left in this mechanic at this point, so I wanted to run it by you guys. Here is what I think is going on... The PNP switch needs to be replaced and the ABS module needs to be rebuilt. However, the ABS module did NOT put the car into limp mode. Can the ABS module even do this? I've read you can even drive the car without the module in. What do you guys think?

Thanks and sorry for the long post.

-Patrick

Sounds like the typical " I want alot of money but I'm a lousy mechanic " routine.

Well I'm no expert but here is what I know:

1) Driving without the abs module doesn't affect the mechanics of the vehicle...besides the ABS ability.

Highly doubt that would cause it to go into limp mode.

2) It does sound like your PNP switch is toast.

3) If the abs module should just be either rebuilt or replaced...you shouldn't be looking at more than 300(350 MAX) bucks.
The most economical route would be to rebuild it. With some soldering tools and some skill you should be good as new.

I've never soldered anything in my life....so what i would do is print out the repair guide (rebuilding guide) of the ABS module and give it to someone who is competent to do such work.

or

Volvo 850 EBAY rebuilders

or

you can search for a rebuilt module from FCP

Great info from 850 Turbo 1

I agree - replace the PNP switch and resolder ( or send for resolder) the ABS module. These are known common problems and should be eliminated before you move on.

As far as limp mode - I agree - not usual for an ABS module to trigger it. But I will let the 850 guru's chime in on that.

After reading your story, neither do I... This wrencher is NOT a Volvo guy !

Yes, they do wear out.

Yes. Read up here about what the mechanic should probably be aware of:

That makes sense.
prienzo wrote:Can the ABS module even do this?
Nah...There are no real connections between the systems.

It'll drive just fine, but all the systems that rely on the speed signal will be inop.
No speedo, odo, cruise control, etc...

Get your ABS module repaired and drop a new PNP switch in and you should be Golden!
Best of Luck.

I'm willing to bet you PNP is just fine. Remove it and clean it up and it will should be good. Remove the ABS module and either resolder it yourself, or ship it out to someone to do it for you. Always try to repair things before you replace them. ;-)

Hey guys, thanks so much for the responses. The mechanic used to supposedly be the service manager at a dealership, but I can't help but think that if someone brings him a BMW, he'd claim to have been a service manager for them too :D

Having looked up how to remove the PNP switch, it seems a little beyond my mechanical abilities, so I am going to have someone else do the job. In your experiences, do you guys think that I should have the job done by someone who works primarily on Volvos? Or, do you think a general mechanic would be okay with doing the job?

As for the ABS, I'll get it removed and send it away to get rebuilt. Once again, thank you for your help.

Didn't I tell you? I used to be the service manager for both Mercedes and ...umm what's the name for that other high end car company...umm...Oh yeah BMW...NOT!

!!!Service managers are NOT mechanics!!!

They supervise the service dept....they probably don't even know how to repair their own cars.

I've found them to be quite GREEDY (dishonest too  ). They try to deceive you into getting unnecessary work and squeeze money out of you like you would squeeze lemons (for lemonade..lol)

That's been my experience...your mileage may differ

From what I understand it's not a difficult job at all...

If you want to avoid highway robbers all together you might as well do it yourself.
