Cambelt

Post by Pecky »

I have a 2001 V40 1.9 Diesel. Yesterday the cambelt snapped, although I was stationary I fear the worst. Is the expected level of valve damage the same as some other makes? or can you sometimes get away with it. According to the service history the belts were changed at 74000 miles, the car has now done 110000, is premature belt failure a known problem or am I just unlucky?

Cheers

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

I think you have been unlucky. Replacement intervals for the '01diesel are 80,000 miles or 8 years.

There are other components which can cause premature failure of the belt: tensioner, pulleys and water pump.

I think there will be some valve damage but as the engine was idling it may well be minimal. Before the head is removed run a compression test on the engine.
