interior blower fan running for no reasons?

Post by carboncow »

2001 T5 120K miles

Wife came home and hour ago and I was in the garage a poking around, no blower fan running. Go back 10 minutes latter and note that the fan is running on high! No keys in ignition, no HVAC controls will do anything to stop it...I put the key back in the ignition and turned to position "I" and it shut off.

I know the fan can fire up to dry the evaporator...but I seem to have read this happens shortly after the car is shut down...not an hour latter. Is this the cause?

Doesn't seem like a fan speed resister failure symptom or ignition switch...but I know relays (especially with a timer) can do such stuff.

Thanks

It's called the afterblow function and yes, sometimes it does not start for 1/2 hour
Is this the 1st summer with your 01?

Thanks for the input. I've only had the car a week and I know all used cars need some tweaking...as there is often a reasons someone else sold it! So I've got my radar out for all the "little" things that may be funky. I noted three odd things so far.

1. The display on the stereo goes out if you push on the plastic at the bottom of stereo unit
2. The fan motor has a bit of subtle squeel on turns...which I've done enough fan motors in Saabs to know what is coming here! Seems to be an easier fix on the Volvos
3. It's stalled on the wife at idle speeds twice, has some jitters and small surges at speed and although the ETM has been replaced (yellow unit) I suspect the 2nd one at 120K miles. I'm going to find out this week if I can run the VIN with Volvo to find out when it was done as I might have a shot at another one before the 10 year/200K runs out. No codes or limp home yet.

thanks for your input.

Not to hijack this thread ...but does the After Blow function exist on the 850(96 T5)?

This is my 1st summer with the 01 v70 and Ive had the same thing happen to my wifes car as it has been posted that it is normal how long should the fan run and does it run more than once? for example it does not run off and on through out a hot day correct? it runs once for a timed period then shuts off until the a/c is used again rt? thanks for your help.

from the manual:

Approximately 50 minutes after the ignition is turned off, the blower may come on automatically, and
run for five minutes, to remove condensation in the A/C evaporator.
