A cheaper alternative might be these folks Volvo 850 ABS Module Rebuilder $35-65


I say might, because if they are not an honest company they may try to instead make more money off of you by insisting that your module is beyond repair(rebuilding) and must be replaced with one that they just might conveniently have in stock or be able to order.

This would end up costing you alot more than $100...maybe double(triple...) that.

Speak to both and see which one you are more comfortable with. Also ask if there are any additional costs? What if they can't rebuild it then what? Turnaround? ...you know the drill

I've seen both companies being recommended.

Having looked up how to remove the PNP switch, it seems a little beyond my mechanical abilities, so I am going to have someone else do the job. In your experiences, do you guys think that I should have the job done by someone who works primarily on Volvos? Or, do you think a general mechanic would be okay with doing the job?

Trust me it's not that bad! It can be done by any DIY'er. But if you don't feel up to it I think a Volvo dealer or and indy that specializes in Volvo's would be the safest bet.

Module Master 3-4 days.
Send it out overnight Monday, they receive it Tuesday
Will be sent back to you either Tuesday night or Wed the latest.
You should have it back by Friday the latest, Thursday if you wish overnight delivery.

I usually send them out overnight Friday for a Monday delivery.
The car is parked over the weekend so no big deal,
They send it to me Tuesday for Wed delivery so my actual downtime is two and a half work days

Hey guys, I ordered a PNP switch from FCP Groton (very pleased with the quick shipment btw ). Anyways, I just dropped the car off to get it installed, should be done in a few hours. I'll update you guys and hopefully this fixes it. Thanks for all of the advice. As usual, there is no lack of support on this forum

Ok guys. While I no longer have to use the shiftlock override button, it does not appear that the problem was fixed. On my ten minute drive home, I did not see the flashing arrow and CEL, but the mechanic said he drove the car around after he finished and saw this very thing. He said that he had the same problem on his 2000 S70 and was able to fix it by swapping out the ABS module. This is what I am going to try next... Hope to keep you guys updated.

So, about the shift lock override... 9/10 times it will work, but sometimes it doesn't. Maybe he didn't align it properly? Anyways, still no CEL and flashing arrow after a half hour "joy" ride, but I noticed the car sometimes hesitates for a second when I hit the gas...

Wait wait, maybe I'm being thick here, but I'm very confused. Your original post states that your problems were an ABS/TRACS light, the up arrow, and your car going into limp mode. I reread the entire thread and you never once mentioned the shiftlock override button. So, can you explain to me what is going on? The PNP replacement has nothing to do with the shiftlock button or the ABS module.

I must have forgot to mention it in my original post. I have had to use the shift lock override button to shift the car. After the PNP switch was replaced, I have only had to use it rarely. Most times, it shifts fine without the button. In addition, after driving the car for a couple of hours today, I had no problems with the flashing arrow and CEL.
