Hi Mat,
I've recently bought a '94 850 SE Automatic,it pulls away and doesn't drop below third gear. When you get to @50 mph it changes up and the kick-down will work. The diagnostic-check shows the codes 1-1-4 and 1-4-3.Can you help me to find where the circuits start and finish? My manual shows me nothing!!
I replaced the selector switch because it seemed stuck on winter mode. The Haynes Manual I have doesn't show how the system works,eg where the sensors are or what they do or how the selector switch works and has no wiring diagrams.
So without folowing the wires all through the car and not knowing what they do what seems like a small job could turn into a nightmare.
Maybe other members may know I'm looking in the wrong place.Any help will be gratefull.
Many thanks,
Mick

I'm searching for manual for the codes, but since I can't find it at the moment, I would highly suggest that you obtain a factory service manual. I also do remember reading about this problem, and if I remember correctly, its more likely to be an electical problem than a mechanical problem.
It could be that the TCM (Transmission Control Module) has put itself in to what we call "limp-home" mode. If a sensor on the transmission (and this is going to well beyond my knowledge) fails, the TCM has a choice of using preset information to allow the transmission to function (limp-home and use the winter mode) or shut down completely (which shouldn't happen). Thats why I suggest investing in a factory service manual.
I wouldn't go about replacing the TCM until you find a way to test all of the sensors. To lead you in the right direction (because I can't find your problem) look at the PNP (neutral safety) switch first.

^^ Look at the PNP section. It could just be a very simple problem...

Your codes indicate a problem with the mode selector switch (econ/sport switch) and the kickdown switch. You may want to check out the connections on the kickdown switch. IIRC, it's back around the firewall. The problem does sort of sound like a PNP switch though, so you may want to look in to that also.
