CV boot rplacement .....help!

Post by jamesjedi »

I bought the Volvo CV boot replacement kit, however, it does not say which grease is for which part. One says shell (it's in a white tube), the other says GKN (in a grey plastic gag). Also i have Hains book....seems like it could be more specific. Could someone post more specific details of boot replacement.

I know it is allot to ask.....thanks.

I was just faced with the same repair, only my OEM boots from fcpgroton had three tubes of grease per kit... all of them the same. Try calling the dealer to find out which grease goes where.

I was going to do the work myself until I called around and got a labor price of $240 from a local import indy. After I left them the car they called to say the $240 was for one side only. Both sides would be $320. I said forget it. They said OK, their mistake. We compromised at $260.

I wimped out on DIYing this one (like most people) because it's a laborious messy job. My other excuse is that I'm 58. If you do this yourself, post back and let us know if it was worth the effort and I'm just getting old.

Started the job with a Hanes Repair manual. Never, never, NEVER, use one of these manuals......useless. It would be good to start a fire with. Anyways, I could not finish the job. Nothing in the book looked like my hub assembly. Frustrating. In addition, to the waste of paper instructions, I was sent the wrong sized axle bolt. Oh well.
The repair manual for my other car cost almost $200. I dn't know what a hanes is worth. Whatever it is, don't buy it. I got the Hanes from the library. If you get a repair manual from the library....get a good one. They are available.
As for the Cross Country, I had to work the next day....so off to the garage it went.

Interesting note; It appears that the wheel bearings were fine. Even the Volvo mechanic thought they needed to be replaced. It was the propeller shaft that had to be replaced.

You can get the whole axle for about $35 each at local parts stores (NAPA) - very easy to replace axles, they just snap/pull out!

Don't make it too hard....
