v40 fuel gauge

i have a volvo v40 se 1997 petrol, the fuel gauge goes down to 70 miles then it runs out of petrol the fuel flasher does not come on either when fuel is low . which end of wiring should i start, also is 30 mpg average the norm.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

I would start at the tank by checking the sender unit. It would appear that the float is sticking and giving a false reading.
