2004 XC90 2.5T timing belt question

Post by xc90surfer »

Question: Volvo says to replace timing belt at 120,000 miles. What have you done on your car or what
would you suggest? Are there other parts suggested to be replaced while doing the belt?
I am concerned as this engine is the interference type.

I have the 2004 XC90 2.5T turbo with 83,000 miles on it, city driving in hot, humid, and flat Houston. I believe
this would be considered sever service conditions when doing maintenance.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Along with the timing belt you have to replace the tensioner and idler pulley.

The 120,000 mile interval only applies to vehicles with engine version 38; 59; 61 & 68 in the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), others have theirs done at 105,000. Your engine version should be 59 but if you would feel happier change the belt at 105,000. I would do that myself as I think 105,000 is enough on a belt which, if it broke, would cost an arm and a leg to repair the damage.
