How to disconnect an O2 Sensor 99/00 V70 Base model? w/Pics

Post by nightc1 »

Base model, not the turbo, 1999 V70 Base Model (The 2000 Non-Turbo V70 is the same according to FCP Groton).

The O2 sensor in this car isn't the one with the red thing that you pull to release the harness connector. Instead it has this:

SIDE (both sides look the same):

The bottom has the slot where it slides onto the little bracket holder that anchors it to the car.

On FPC Groton they show the disconnected connector looking like this:

How in blue blazes do I disconnect this thing?

The pics are actually better than the view I get since I put my cell phone down in the car to take them. It looks like in the first picture (Top) that I need to do something to that odd looking area where the tab on the connector (in pic 3 from FCP Groton) must lock into something.... but I'm at a loss. I've shoved flat head screwdrivers in there and nothing seems to release. I don't want to break this thing.

I've fooled with this thing off an on for a few days when I get a few minutes (it's my work car and I have a regular car to drive while this one is out of commission) and I've probably put a good hour total into looking at it from above, below... etc.

I've searched the forums high and low, the older model 850 docs and Haynes Repair Manual... and the web and found nothing.

Help

Hi, just done mine last month. Push the blade of a flat screw driver into the top of the connector, the raised up bit ( where your finger is in photograph two). It sort of depresses inside and the two parts pull apart.
Rich.

Those connectors are a total PITA to take apart. Usually I can get them with a lot of poking, twisting and prodding WHILE pulling to get the thing to disconnect.

SOLVED

I used a much larger flat head and put it between the two ridges (circled in red in the attached image) and it slid apart without any need to pull (which is good as it's hard enough getting one arm in here).

It was a super smooth disconnect.

Really I think I could disconnect this while still attached to the bracket now.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess the flatheads I was using before were too flat or skinny. Finding one that just barely fit between the two ridges with a long taper worked easily.

Ah how the simplest things can stump.

Find a flathead that barely fits between the points marked with red circles that also has a somewhat long taper and push. It should release without any other pushing/pulling on the plug.
