Air Conditioning blows cold then warm
Hello Everyone, It is me mstrplmber with another problem. When I start the car even in the heat of the day the air is very cold, however occassionally it starts getting warmer. If I stop and restart the car, say after 5 minutes it blows cold again. I have tried turning the temp controls to hot then back to cold which doesn't really help. I have a 2001 Volvo S60 2.4T. You have helped me a great deal in the past which If I didn't tell you was very much appreciated. I hope you can give me some advice on this issue as well. Volvo quoted me $652.52 for the compressor and $350 for labor. Would you think that included everything needed to fix the problem or could it be something simple. Thanks in advance. mstrplmber

It probably IS your compressor.
What is happening is the compressor clutch is weak and when it becomes hot it can't 'hold'
Search the site, there's a DYI quickie clutch gap repair that takes about 10 minutes and will work if that's the problem. What you're going to do is shim the clutch out so it can "grab"
When you ask these questions, MILEAGE is important

Hi JRL The mileage is 171,000 It looks like I will have to sell this car because in the last 3 months I have had to spend $1700 and I have been quoted around $1000 for the A/C problem. Nobody wants to shim the clutch they want me to buy a new one. I am not sure the mechanic I spoke with even understands how to shim the clutch. Any information is appreciated. Thanks

It's a very easy fix even if you aren't mechanically inclined at all - it took me all of 15 minutes on a friend's '99 V70 with the same problem. And that was just because the clip kept popping out. No mechanic will do it because they just want your money.
