Looking into getting one. Any problem areas I should be wary of?

Early 06 VR's had a transmission valve body recall. Automatics are rumoured to have a better collar sleeve. Reports are that none have failed yet.

JRL, I'm confident he knows that. He's just using it on purpose.

Come on ya'll, I needs some more learnin'.
As you can tell by my SN I'm no stranger to the 850 turbo and its foibles. Am I going to be throwing $$ at a 40k mile '06 R?
Do I run away or do I jump in and enjoy the fun?

I've had my '04 R for a month, and after a $1600 "Old School 90k Service" she runs (very) nicely. I budgeted for the service. The prior owner did not mistreat the car, but simply wasn't a Volvo nut like we are. He admitted she needed a few new fluids, tires soon, and a good cleaning. In return, the price was right.

I trusted my instincts when I bought it. The test drive revealed a somewhat sluggish engine that I knew I could wake up. There were no leaks or drips. Oil dipstick was perfect: no sludge, no grime, clean oil. The owner had used Amsoil in it since he bought it at 50k. He had records of the dealer maintenance from 0-50k miles.

Tell us more about the '06 you're looking at, maybe we can throw a bit more info your way.

Ask there and you will get a plethora of answers, however before you ask you should provide a bit more info like the MILEAGE (EDIT, OK I see 40K) on the wagon you're looking at and if it's a GT or a 6 speed manual

You should be fine but at 40K it may be just in time for all new brakes

I have an 04 S60R. If you are looking at an automatic, there really aren't any major issues with the 06. If you are looking at a manual, the only issue is the slave cylinder going bad.

The angle gear is very good on the 06 so that should not be much of an issue.

One other thing I have heard of being an issue is the timing belt tensioner going before the 100K interval. This is why I use the old schedule and change it at 70K.
