'99 v70xc starting problem

Post by ronnieleetwist »

Ok, so about a month ago, I was driving along, stopped for gas, car won't start. Sit 10 minutes and it started and got me home. Next day, I start it up, but it's running a bit off kilter. Drive it a mile down the road...it quits on me. It tries to start, reves and dies each time I go to start it. Had to limp it home about 100' at a time...Figured it's the MAF since my 98 s70 did this to me a couple of years ago. Ordered an MAF, (though it was not a BOSCH) and replaced it. Still the same thing going on  . If I let it sit for a day or two, it will start and run for about a minute or two, then die...try to start, reves once and dies. Check all my vacume hoses, nothing obvious there. Hooked it up to my obd2 scanner (hand held) showing no codes. So, I changed the fuel filter. No start. Now I am down to the fuel pump, fuel pump relay or possibly the CAT. Any thoughts on this? Thanks! :D

I agree - it sounds like a relay, sensor or electronic module. I would bet on a cam/rpm sensor , fuel pump or relay.

While you are driving and it dies does it shut down sharply or does it act funny for a second or two and then die.

If it acts funny first I would bet on the pump. If not I would bet on the relay, sensor or module.

Perhaps someone can chime in on if this is a common ETM issue. Please let us know if yours has been changed and how many miles since.

It's more of a sputter and die. I was thinking fuel pump too. I went to change it out today with one I had from my 850 parts car, but I think it's an external fuel pump as there is no pump access from the inside that I could find. Under the fuel pump access panel there is nothing! Have not investigated this yet as I was running out of daylight. It will start after 'resting' but die soon after...Any insight on the fuel pump? I would think that the BOSCH I have from my parts car would work...maybe I am wrong about this.

I have the same issue with my 2000 v70 xc. It wouldn't start (doing the revving then sputtering thing) and then dying, but if I let it sit for a while (an hour and half or more) it'll start up again. This usually occurs between 12:30 pm and 4 pm for some reason. Anyway, I can't seem to locate the fuel filter to change it out. Is it easy to get to?

It's funny how Volvos have a sense of TIME. Don't think time of day really has anything to do with the problem. Actually, I have three volvos. a 94 850t wagon, a 98 s0 sedan and the v70xc. The v 70 is a totally different animal. No distributor, AWD, and a fuel pump that is not where it should be, LOL...I opened the fuel pump access like I did on the 850 and there was no fuel pump. I am guessing that you might have to drop the tank (???) Long story short, I just got really pissed that I could not figue this out and towed the car to my mechanic. (I go to him when I am stumped) I am going to let him deal with it. I asked him to check the pump, pump relay, and the throttle position sensor. His OBDII is way more efficient than mine. I will let you know what he finds out!

Oh...to answer your question tph, the fuel filter on my '99 is under the rear passenger's side right up against the fuel tank. You don't even really need to lift the car to get to it.
