How to Remove and Re-install Internal Rear View Mirror

Post by yangul »

Hello Guys,

I was removing some hanging air freshener from around my review mirror when suddenly it got loose in its support. How can I remedy this issue?
Secondly, the odometer and trip counter are not working on my 1996 Volvo 850 GLT. How can I resolve this problem?
:o

These are Roof mounted with a safety breakaway. A pretty good idea from these Volvo guys.
You may be able to remove the plastic cover with the map lights in it and pop it back into it's mount.
It looks like this inside:

But, it's probably gonna be a real pain to replace while the mount is installed.
Those spings are pretty tight and it's not an easy reach for applying pressure.
You may have to resort to removing the mount, taking the cone-headed
screw out and putting it back together that way. Best of Luck!

IF the arm that holds the mirror is solid (doesn't move around) and the mirror is loose and wobbly... then unfortunately the mirror is shot and probably will eventually break loose. I had this happen on my 99 V70. I ended up ebaying for a mirror. I think it was something like $20 for a used one. I did some crazy stuff with superglue and rubber bands to tie me over until I bought the mirror... but I leave it to you to get creative if the mirror is the issue.

If the whole thing is loose... then yeah, it's a screw to adjust and that's it.

I followed these steps and removed the mount, but I can't get the springs back in. Are there any tricks to this?
