Can I upgrade the turbo?

I have a 1997 850 GLT 190 HP. Is it possible to upgrade the turbo to the high pressure turbo like the T-5? How about adding an intercooler? Im just curious.

Although I can't remember where, I have read about it being done. It is possible, although I don't know how difficult or expensive. And before someone tells you to just go get an R trim, you will find that adding a high pressure turbo to your GLT will give you more HP than the R trim had. The engine size on the R was smaller than that of the GLT.

You can upgrade to a larger turbo to get more power, but due to the higher compression ratio of the B5254T engine, you'll run into problems with detonation if you turn the boost up too much. Because of this, you won't be able to make as much power as a B5234T with the same turbo setup and fuel mapping. If you're looking for gobs of power, you'd be better off dropping a T5 engine in. But if you're just looking for a bit more oomph, I'd suggest throwing a 16T turbo on there. You may need a different downpipe for the switch from the 13G to the 16T, not sure though, but a nice 3" downpipe will make a good difference over the dinky restrictive stock one anyways. You will also need a software remap.
