We're beginning to delve into things that even I don't understand yet...the transmission is not my forte...I'm sorry.

If you do go ahead and replace it, can you get back to us on the results?

I wanted to post an update in case anyone stumbled upon this in a search. At some point, my transmission overheated and did serious damage to its insides. Although the CEL was pointing at the shift solenoid as the problem, this was not actually the problem. The transmission itself is not salvageable and needed replacement.

How was it determined that it's not salvagable?prienzo wrote:I wanted to post an update in case anyone stumbled upon this in a search. I'm going through very similar situation. Had it stuck in limp mode and ABS light.
Anway, long story on everything...but replaced PNP, rebuilt ABS module & replaced all solenoids.
It drove fairly good after that, was still getting a VSS error though, but trany went through all gears. Sometimes holding 1st & 2nd longer than I'd like though.
I ask because I'm hoping al my time has not been wasted!
All I know is that they told me the tranny couldn't be rebuilt. I really have no reason not to believe them, considering the shop would actually make more money in labor for doing a rebuild than a replace. What sort of check engine lights are you getting?

Getting P0500. Speedo working. I tried pulling ABS fuse and that knocked out speedo as expected. I hooked up an ELM ScanTool and drove around, getting readings on the VSS whole time.
I had started looking into it, then realized it was leaking ATF. It was first job that big I've done and also did not use the Volvo chemical gasket and just some red Permatex RTV, so alot of room for failure there. It was really heart breaking after spending so much time having to drill out four of the bolts, also a first.
I had to rip it back down so I could use the Volvo chemical gasket on it, and ended up stripping the hard to reach bolt on bottom left. Again, heart breaking. That one I had to chissel out because I could not get a drill in there.
I haven't put it back together yet, after I do hopefully it won't be leaking and I'll start a new thread for the VSS problem.
I could believe someone not wanting to make the money on the tranny work. Before I decided to do the solenoids myself I called five places and no one was interested in installing the solenoids for me. One place said they only did American and Japanese, one didn't even call me back. The other three were not tranny shops, but one was a place that specializes in euro cars, and where I take my A6 (well did, when it had an after market warranty still). They were all too nervous too open a tranny (for liability reasons I'm sure).
