Paint Scratches That Wont stay away

Post by peacock »

i made the mistake a while back of trying to remove sap from my car with the green side of a sponge, later finding bug and tar remover it came off in seconds with no elbow grease at all. im now left with some blemishes on my hood and rear quarter panel. ive tried polish and then hard shell wax, these take out all of them until the first heavy or for that matter any rain.

the rain takes the wax right back off and leaves me with the marks again. is there a better way to take these out?

meguiars scratch x easy instructions and user friendly it even removed light water sand scratches there is even a tutorial on youtube, i would use some wax remover or a clay bar prior to using this product in order to get a clean surface to get best results

You might need an orbital buffer and some light compound. It is hard to take out scuffs like that with just elbow grease. The orbital buffer can be bought anywhere for about $40-60 and of course you can use it to apply polish and wax.

The polish isn't going to cut enough and the wax will just cover it until it wears away.

Don't be surprised if off the shelf scratch removers are not aggressive enough to smooth out the scratches. Those green pads can cut pretty deep into paint. You may have to go to a medium cut or heavy cut compound. (also available from meguiar). A good deal of caution should be exercised when using one of these more aggressive compounds and an orbital may not be enough to smooth out the scratches they put in. If the Scratch X doesn't do the job a good body or detail shop with a high speed buffer and a good detail man can do an entire hood in about an hour. Absolute best procedure is wet sand with 1200 grit, then 1500 grit, then 2000 grit, then 4000 grit, then buff. Then you will have some really smooth spots. These compounds have oil and wax in them so tell the shop beforehand that you will ask to see the areas be wiped down with a cleaning solvent. You want to check the work with no wax or oil to make sure the scratches are gone. If they don't want to do that go to another shop.

agreed an absolute clean area free of wax and other residue is the best way to start especialy prior to colour sanding

if scratches and blemishes are light scratch x should do the work otherwise a good compound and in more severe cases colour sand

You will probably need to do several steps if the scratches are more then 1500 grit deep. When I got my car it had never been detailed. I had to start with meguiars medium cut, then megs fine cut, then 3m polish, then megs NXT sealer, then S100 carnauba wax. It was a lot of work but well worth the time. This was done with a Porter cable orbital buffer.
