Re: Flame Trap?

Post by MatDesign84 »

Someone told me the 97, 850's with a turbo do not have a flame trap. Instead it has an oil catch can?
I dunno what he was talking about any help?!

Only non-turbo models have flame traps...turbo models don't have them.

These cars came from the factory with the plastic flame traps, but as a replacement...you can also buy a metal flame traps. The metal ones i think...are aftermarket replacement.

The metal ones are the original design that proved junky. The plastic ones are the new improved design. that came out around 95-96. My 93 I used to have had a metal one I replaced it quickly with the plastic version.

My mistake for saying it was a metal piece, it is plastic, I removed it today. It was pretty clogged up with crap. Will there be any negative effects of not replacing it with a new one?
Thanks.

Nope! Take it out, throw it away, and forget about it. In the older 4-cyl engines, they would occasionally backfire, so that was there to keep things from igniting. These motors don't do that, but the design was just carried over as a precaution that just clogs up.

I always kept one in my other 850, but apparently you dont need it because when they V70/C70 etc. came out they removed it from the engine.

I just keep my flame trap in, I cleaned the shit out of it with TB cleaner by CRC and some Seafoam spray. I also did same with tubing/hosing connected to the flame trap.
