I had mine off recently. It's easy to find, look under the car just in front of the driver side front tire. You can remove the hoses without taking the canister out if you want, just be easy with the ends so they don't tear. The larger hose on mine was split but not rotted, so I just cut an inch off and put back on. My canister had probably been off before as it was held on to a flat bracket by a zip tie, but it shouldn't be more than two or three bolts holding it on. I've been having rough idle issues and sporatic crapping out issues. I may need to replace my purge valve and gas cap as well. Keep us posted on your results. thanks

Thanks for the tips and I'll keep you updated. If you happen to replace your purge valve and you manage to get a Bosch one from Germany, let me know where you ordered it from. lol

You can rebuild these with a little time and some black rtv and save yourself a lot of money. I did it on my BMW E32 and it fixed the problem without buying a new valve.

Inside is a rubber seal that gets hard and shrinks, not allowing the valve to close air tight.

You can test this way:

Apply 12v dc to both terminals, it should click.

Apply vacuum to the side with the arrow pointing away. You can use a squeeze bulb or whatever.

It should hold for a while, if not the valve is bad.

Go here and do this thing I did. http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh ... ?t=1449842

Where the hell were you when I started this thread?! I think your advice is repair database worthy.

I didn't have a Volvo on the 8th :-)

I don't know the long-term usefulness of the fix but it should hold for a while.

Haha, I looked over your write up and it seems like a pretty solid repair job. One of the moderators should add your write up to the repair database. How has it held up on your BMW?

Well, it worked for a month and then I totalled the car, which was unrelated.

I think it should hold up pretty well though. The only problem is that fuel is going through the valve and might eat the RTV but it is just vapor so I think it should be OK.

After rereading it, I may not have been very clear about filling the neck where the O-ring is. Just put a big glob in there and leave the O-ring in place, then make sure none got in the metal portion of the valve.

PS: When this fails, it is a GIGANTIC vacuum leak and you will have poor idle but be better when you're revving.

That's what I wanted to hear. I kept getting a code for a major EVAP leak and since I replaced the purge valve, everything ::knock on wood:: has been fine.

I think Im having the same problem on my 97 NA. I got gas the other day and I had a hard time starting it right after filling up. This never happened before. Ive also gotten a P044X code recently and noticed random stumbling, missing especially when cold.

I found on some other sites that theres a Hyundai purge valve that you can buy at the dealer for $50 and is a bosch replacement that fits most european cars....does anyone know if this works on the 850s?
