My wife asked about this when she noticed that her cell phone was warm when she placed it into the slot just above the area where you insert the CD. I put my hand there and noticed that the top of the slot was very warm. The bottom wasn't as warm. Like you indicated, all the controls and stuff work, but it seemed odd that it was cooking the items inside the slot.

So I don't know if this is normal or not, but I can tell you that I have noticed it too. Mine is a 04 XC90.

I wonder if it is a venting problem. There should be some air allowed to pass through from behind the radio to keep it cool. I believe that they all have mini fans built into them to protect them from overheating. However, with several people feeling it, it is unlikely that there is an obstruction. You might look for a mechanic, via angies list, or an audio place that can take a look at it. I would hate for something to melt or catch fire while driving!

We have an Envoy as well and have found that if you adjust the brightness of the interior lights, dash, radio etc, at the rheostat, the radio is not as warm. Obviously, adjust the rheostat so everything is still legible. Granted there is some heat generated from the radio operation itself, but the bulk of the heat is generated from the illumination bulbs themselves.

I wonder if you could put a poptart in the slot on the way to work?

Ok tried that idea.......seems that the ICM(centre display) generates the most heat and the rheostat has no effect on it, in daylight anyway. I suppose we should consider it normal.... just like the failing of the ICM(could it be because it get to hot :) )
and also the blocked drains on the sun/moon roof and the infernal errors resulting from water flooding the car.
