1998 v70 Dashboard Gets Very Hot

Hello there,

The dashboard gets really hot on this car when sitting in the sun. The top surface is quite large, so it gets a lot of sunlight. I happen to know that the sun supplies at least 1KW (1 Kilowatt) of power per square meter around noonish, so that's a lot of heating power, and so over time that is a lot of energy absorbed by the dash and converted into heat. That would heat a small room in the winter time if it felt cold otherwise.

But anyway, i thought it might have something to do with the engine at first, but then realized that when i went out there the other day maybe around 11am to 1pm while the sun was out, without the car ever running yet that day the dashboard temperature was 170 degrees F. That's pretty hot, as water boils at 212 F.

So the question is, is this normal for these cars? I guess it is partly because the dashboard is so dark, like a dark to medium grey.
What do you think, and any suggestions how to stop this?
I hate the heat to being with.

One of the fold up sunshade thingies. Dark colors in the sun is the recipe for solar collectors

I use a silver reflective sunshade. $20 at a local auto parts store. Money well-spent.

Hi,

The parking is somewhat limited here, so i guess i'll have to go with the sun screen.

The pic of the two eyes sun screen is cute, but wow that car looks beautiful, is that the '95 ? Very nice finish.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I have a few health issues regarding the heat in the summer time so i have to watch out a little. Anything that reduces my heat exposure is very good.

If you crack a window or the sunroof you will keep the interior temp in the 120-140 F range.

By the time solar energy reaches out Volvos. It's down quite a bit from the 1000 watts per sq meter. A small thermonuclear device will create a local shielding effect by putting dirt in the atmosphere , see your Doctor for other side effects.
